Background:
Spread over 874 square km of land, Bandipur National Park was set up by the Mysore Maharajas in 1931.
Situated at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur is surrounded by Karnataka's Rajiv Gandhi National Park (Nagarhole), Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Kerala's Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Together, they form the Niligiri Biosphere Reserve.
The park has tigers, leopards, elephants, gaur, Sloath bear, hyena etc and over 230 spieces of birds.
It was also a part of the Project Tiger scheme launched in 1973 by the Worldwide Fund for Nature to save the Tigers and their habitats.

Air: Bangalore (219 km) has the nearest airport.
Rail: Mysore Railway station (80 km) is the nearest railhead.
Road: It is on Mysore-Ooty road. Good roads connect Bandipur to Mysore, Bangalore (via Mysore) and Ooty via Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary.
