Andaman and Nicobar islands were one of the worst hit places of India by the Tsunami of Dec 26th 2004, which was caused by a massive earthquake just off Indonesia.
Thousands of people staying here lost their lives, homes and even the airforce stationed at Car Nicobar suffered due to this tidal fury.
Popularly known, as the Kala Pani, the Andaman and Nicobar islands, comprising of 572 islands, are now upcoming tourist destinations.
The islands have been home to aboriginal tribes since pre-historic times. The first British settlement took place in 1789 but was abandoned in 1796.
Than in 1858, a year after the 1857 fight for independence, Captain Archibald Blair of the Bombay Marine (the East India Company's Navy) was sent to Port Blair in to establish a penal colony. He named it Port Cornwallis in honor of his commander, Admiral Sir William Cornwallis.
The European settlement was established near the site of the old penal colony, and was named Port Blair in honor of Captain Blair.
Now Port Blair is the Capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar and is a gateway to many of the beautiful islands of the region.
The islands have some amazing beaches, great marine life and exotic corals.The culture and traditions of the tribal people who once lived on the islands have also become a great attraction for the tourist.

What to see in Andaman:
The Cellular Jail
Location: Port Blair
The Cellular Jail is where the freedom fighters were sent for kala pani ki saaza to be tortured by British during the Indian freedom struggle. The Cellular Jail was completed in 1906 and it consisted of single cells where prisoners were kept in solitary confinement.
The Light and Sound show called Son-et-Lumiere every evening at 6 pm (Hindi) and 7.15 pm (English) brings to life the saga of freedom struggle.
There is also a museum, an Art Gallery, and Photo Gallery, which is open from 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 5 pm (Monday closed)
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park
Location: at Wandoor, 29 km from Port Blair
Covering an area of 281.5 sq km, the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is made up of 15 islands, creeks and the open sea. The amazing marine life and corals can be viewed by glass bottom boats or Scuba diving.
Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Island are the best islands within the Marine Park to go snorkeling and watching marine life.
Gandhi Park
Location: Port Blair
This beautiful park has amusement rides, water sports, kale, garden, nature walk, restaurant and remains of Japanese temple and bunker. There is also an old water tank that used to supply water to Port Blair and nearby places. This tank was made in record time 13 days.
Sippighat Farm
Location: 14 km from Port Blair
This 80-acre farm maintained by government has cultivation of spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pepper.
Chidiya Tapu
Location: The Southern most tip of Port Blair, 25 km from main city
A great picnic site with beaches, mangroves and forest.
Collinpur
Location: Near Tirur, 36 km from Port Blair
Beautiful sandy beach with shallow water. Great place for swimming, sun basking and viewing sunset.
Madhuban
Location: Northeast of South Andaman. 75 km by road/20 km by ferry and road from Port Blair
Good place for trekking area and viewing exotic birds and animals.
Mount Harriet
Location: 55 km by road and 15 km by ferry and road from Port Blair
The highest peak in South Andaman's (365 m high), this was the summer headquarters of the Chief Commissioner during the British Raj. Good place to go trekking, viewing rare birds, animals and butterflies.
Havelock Island
Location: 38 km from Port Blair
Beautiful unspoilt beach with Camping facility.
Barren Island
Location: 135 km from Port Blair
Land of volcano, the 3 km wide Barren Island is the only active volcano in India. It erupted in 1991, 1994 and 1995 after remaining dormant for 177 years
Ross Island
Location: Andaman Island
Ross Island is the smallest island (0.6 sq km) in the Andaman Group of Islands. It was once capital of Port Blair and now has ruins of bygone days. There is a museum called Smritika on the island and the Ross island can be visited during the day time by taking boat from the Phoenix Bay jetty which leaves at 8.30 am, 10.30 am, and 12.30 pm.
Viper Island
Location: Near harbor of Port Blair
The first jail was constructed here and all the convicts brought to the Andaman's were put up here. It still has ruins of gallows on top of a hillock where prisoners were hanged.
Chatham Island
Location: Near Port Blair
It has one of the largest and oldest Saw Mill in Asia. The sawmill is on the tiny island connected by a bridge over a stretch of sea-water.
Neil Islands
Location: 36 km from Port Blair
Has beautiful beaches and is a great place for snorkeling. It has predominantly Bengali population.
Anthropological Museum
Location: At Phoenix Bay
Good place to see the lifestyle, tools and other aspects of the life of the Paleolithic Islanders. The Museum remains closed on Mondays.
Fisheries Museum
Location: Near Andaman Sports Complex
Houses different species of marine life peculiar to the island. Remains closed on Monday.
Corbyn's Cove Tourism Complex
Location: Near Port Blair
Great picnic spot with one of the most picturesque beaches, it is ideal for sea bathing and sun-basking.
Long Island
Location: 82 km from Port Blair
Known for unspoilt beaches at lalaji bay, which are frequented by dolphins. Connected by boat, which comes 4 times in a week from the Phoenix Bay Jetty.
Rangat
Location: 170 km by road and 90 km by sea from Port Blair.
A quiet village with turtle nesting ground at Cutbert Bay beach, 20 km from Rangat bazaar. Best time to view the nesting of turtles is during December - February.
Mayabunder
Location: In Northern part of Middle Andaman, 242 km by road and 136 km by sea from Port Blair
Inhabited by the settlers from Burma, East Pakistan and ex-convicts, Mayabunder has excellent scenic beauty and beautiful beaches. The beach at Avis Island (30 minutes boat journey from Mayabunder), Karmatang beach (13 km) and mangrove lined creeks are the attractions. Karmatang beach is also a turtle nesting ground (December to February).
Diglipur
Location: in North Andaman Island, 290 km by road and 180 km by sea from Port Blair.
Known for eco-friendly tourism, it is famous for its oranges, rice and marine life. Saddle Peak, 732 m, the highest point in the islands is nearby. Kalpong, the only river of Andaman flows from here.
Little Andaman Island
Location: 120 km South from Port Blair by the sea
There is a beautiful beach at Butler Bay, a waterfall and plantation of oil palms. It is the vegetable bowl for the Nicobar group of islands and the Onge tribals live in this island. Entry to tribal areas is restricted.

Car Nicobar
Location: 270 km (16 hours) by sea from Port Blair
This flat fertile island is headquarters of Nicobar District. It has beautiful beaches and the land is covered with coconut palms.
Great Nicobar
Location: Southernmost of the Nicobar islands, 540 km (50 to 60 hours) by sea from Port BlairThe southern most tip of India is located here at Indira Point (formerly Pygmallion Point). The beach near Galathia is the nesting ground for Giant Leather Back Turtles.
Katchal
Location: 425 km from Port Blair by sea
Katchal is the Easternmost island in the Nicobar group. This tiny island has beautiful beaches at East bay, Jhula and West bay.

Reaching there:
Air: Port Blair Airport is connected to Chennai and Kolkata by air. The Alliance Airways has flights from Chennai (2 ½ hours) on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and from Kolkata (2 hours) on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Jet Airways has daily flight from Chennai. Foreign tourist charter flights are also allowed to land at Port Blair airport.
Rail:There is no Railway access to the islands from main-land India.
Sea: Thrice or Four times in a month, ships ply between Kolkata - Port Blair - Kolkatta (56 hours), Chennai - Port Blair - Chennai (60 hours) and once a month between Vishakhapatnam - Port Blair - Vishakhapatnam (56 hours).
Ship journey is slow and a little hard but is inexpensive as compared to flying to Port Blair.

Permits
Foreign Tourists
All Foreign tourists need a permit to visit Andaman. A 30-day permit (which can be extended by another 15 days) can be obtained from the immigration authorities, Indian Missions Overseas, Foreigners Registration Offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkatta and from the immigration authorities at airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chennai. Permits are also issued at the Port Blair Airport on arrival. Ship passengers should obtain permit at a shipping office or Foreigners' Registration office.
The places covered by this permit for night halt are South Andaman Island, Middle Andaman Island and Little Andaman Island (except tribal reserve), Neil Island, Havelock Island, Long Island, Diglipur, Baratang, North Passage and islands in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (excluding islands - Boat Hobday, Twin, Tarmugli, Malay and Pluto). Night halt in the Park requires permission.
Day Halt is allowed at South Cinque Island, Ross Island, Narcondum Island, Interview Island, Brother Island, Sister Island and Barren Island ( Barren Island can be visited on board vessels only).
The Nicobar Islands are out of bound for non-Indians.
Indian Tourists
