Ajmer and Pushkar

Famous for:
Dargah of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddun Chisti, sacred for Muslims and Hindus. Also famous for "Malpua" a sweet made in ghee and sugar syrup and "Gulkand" made of rose petals.

Background:
Ajmer was founded in the 7th century by Raja Ajai Pal Chauhan and is famous for the miracle Dargah of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddun Chisti. .
Flanked by the Ana Sagar Lake on one side and the barren Aravalli ranges on the other, Ajmer has a blend of the Sufi Culture and Hindu religion.
It is also the base for visiting Pushkar (11 km), a holy place for Hindus.
The city also has many monuments from the Mughal era and is a good place to find handicraft items.

What to see:
The Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddun Chisti
Location: Foothills in the old part of the town
Popularly known as the Dargah Sharif, this is a very holy place for people of all religion. Khwaja Moinuddun Chisti was a Sufi saint who came to Ajmer in 1192 and preached here. After his death his tomb (or Dargah) was made.Emperor Akbar had visited the Dargah and asked for a son, and got his wish fulfilled and since then the Dargah Sharif has became a miracle place where thousands of people come each year to have their wishes fulfilled.

The Ana Sagar Lake
Location: North of the Ajmer city
Raja Anaji Chauhan built this artificial lake with marble pavilions and beautiful garden in the 12th century. The lake has boating facility.

Adhai-Din-Ka-Jophra mosque
Location: In the outskirts of the Ajmer city just beyond the Dargah Sharif
Sultan Mohammad Ghauri in 1193 built this mosque, which is believed to have been built in just two and a half days on the building which was a Sanskrit college within a temple.

Taragarh Fort
Location: 3 km beyond the Adhai-Din-Ka-Jophra. Requires steep one and half hour climb
Built in the 7th century by Ajai Pal Chauhan on the top of a hill, the Taragarh fort or the Star Fort has a breathtaking view of the Ajmer city.

Nasiyan, Red Temple
Located: On Prithvi raj Road, Ajmer city
Built in 1864, the Red colored Nasiyan temple is a beautiful Jain temple for the follower of the Digambar sect.

Government Museum (or Daulat Khana or Akbars Palace)
Location: Near the Eastern wall of the city
Originally a palace of Emperor Akbar, Daulat Khana is converted into a museum, which has good collection of Mughal and Rajput armory and sculptures.

Pushkar
Location: 11 km from Ajmer City
Pushkar, the abode of Lord Brahma, is a holy place for Hindus and the venue for the largest cattle fair in the World, which is held every year in the Kartik month (October - November). The Pushkar Lake is believed to be the first place created by Lord Brahma when he created Earth and bathing here is considered to be very holy for Hindus. There are many temples, about 52 ghats and Pushkar Palace near the Lake.

Mayo College
Located: Southeast of Ana Sagar Lake.
Built in 1873, to provide quality education to the Princes and children of rulers, the Mayo College is considered to be one of the finest public school of India.

Reaching there:
Air: Jaipur Airport (138 km) is the nearest airport connecting Ajmer with rest of the India by air.

Rail: Ajmer Railway station is connected with trains from cities and towns of west and north India. Most trains leaving Delhi for Mumbai via Jaipur stops are Ajmer.

Road: NH 8 (Delhi - Jaipur - Ajmer - Udaipur - Ahmedabad - Vadodra - Mumbai) and NH 79 (Amjer - Nasirabad - Mandsaur - Indore) are the two National Highways passing through Ajmer.

Ajmer is very well connected with good network of roads and can be easily reached from Jaipur (3 hours) and Delhi (9 hours.)
