Background:
Kaziranga National Park is situated on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra river, covering 430 sq km.
This World Heritage site (UNESCO 1985) is well known for its one-horned Rhino. It was made a wild life sanctuary in 1950 and in 1974 was made a National Park. It also got an award for being one of the best-managed parks in India in 1999.
Apart from one-horned rhino, it is home to many mammals, including Tigers, Elephants, Leopard, Wild Buffalo, Wild Boars, Panthers, Bears, and thousands of birds.

What to see:
The park has tall elephant grasses that can grow up to 6m high with marshland and evergreen forest. One of the best ways to see the wildlife is on the backs of elephants. 
Mihimukh is the starting point for the park from where elephants can be hired. The one hour elephant rides are very famous and seats needs to be booked the previous evening at the park administrative Center in Kohora.
The Elephant rides timing are: 0500-0600, 0630-0730 and 1530-1630.
Jeeps are also available and the timings are 8 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 4.30 pm
There are watchtowers located at Sohola, Mihimukh, Kathpara, Foliamare and Harmoti within the park for viewing the wildlife. 

Boat rides at the nearby Rhino land park are also available.
Assam Tourism Offices in Guwahati and Jorhat also take bookings for conducted tours of the park.

Sites nearby:
The Kakochang waterfalls

Location: 13 km from Bokakhat
The Kakochang waterfalls are not far from the park. Near the waterfalls, there are ruins of the ancient Numaligarh, which are of great archaeological importance.

Reaching there: 
Air: Jorhat Airport (94 km) is the nearest airport. It has direct flights from Kolkata. Guwahati Airport (217 km) is better connected with flights from more cities of India.
 

Rail: Furkating Railway Station (75 km) is the nearest railway station. It is on meter gauge line and is connected with Guwahati, which in turn is well connected with other parts of India by rail.
 

Road: NH 37 (Junction with NH 31B Near Goalpara - Guwahati - Jorahat - Kamargaon - Makum - Saikhoaghat) is the nearest National Highway. The approach to park by road is from Kohora, which is 5 km from the Park on the NH 37.
Buses of ASRTC ply from Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Furkating and halt at Kohora. Accommodation is available at Kohora.
