Background:
Situated in the Thar desert, the desert city of Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 by (and is named after), the Bhatti Rajput ruler, Rawal Jaisal.
It is famous for its magnificent 12th century Jaisalmer fort, palaces and havalies built by the rich merchants.
It was a prosperous city located on the ancient trade route of India with places like Africa, Egypt etc. The Mughal Emperor, Alla-Ud-Din Khilji captured it in the 13th century. He ruled Jaisalmer for 9 years but the place is filled with stories of valor and courage shown not only by the Rajput men of those times, but also by the women who all committed Jauhar (self immolation) rather than surrendering to the Mughals.
Today, it has become the destination for tourists who would like to experience the true desert life and is especially known for the 3-day Desert festival organized by Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation in February, near the awesome Jaisalmer Fort. Very famous amongst both, local and foreign tourists for handicrafts, folk performances by local artisans in colorful dresses, music, dances, food, camel rides and some interesting competitions like camel tug-of-war and best moustache contest! A must for traveler in this region.
