Background:
The ancient city of Gwalior has been ruled by many dynasties until 1885, when Jiyaji Rao Scindia took it over.
Named after a the 8th century legendary saint Gwalipa who cured the then chieftain Suraj Sen of a deadly disease, Gwalior, the hometown of the legendary singer Tansen, is now a modern Indian city known for its temples, palaces, monuments and educational institutions.

What to see:
Gwalior Fort
Built in the 15th century, the magnificent fort it lies on top a hill overlooking the city. It was amongst the most invincible forts of India and still has a 2 mile long and 35 ft high outer wall. Within the fort are the 15th century Gujari Mahal, Man Mandir Palace and the Suraj Kund built by Suraj Sen sometime in the 9th century.
Teli-ka-Mandir
Location: Inside the Gwalior fort
The 100 ft high 9th century temple has roof of Dravidian style and the North Indian Indo-Aryan style of decoration.
Mohammad Ghaus Tomb
A tomb built of sandstone for the Afghan prince Mohammad Ghaus.
Tansen's tomb
Location: Adjacent to Mohammad Ghaus Tomb
Built in memory of the famous musician Tansen, the tomb is also the venue for the annual National level music festival, which is held in November - December.
Jai Vilas Palace
The 35 rooms palace is partly being used as a residence for the Scindia royal family of Gwalior and the other half is a museum showing the princely lifestyle. The main attraction is a silver toy train with cut glass wagons, whch was used for serving guests.
