Background:
Situated on the banks of the river Noyyal, Coimbatore is the third largest city of Tamil Nadu and is known as "Manchester of South" due to its textile industry. It is also one of the most industrialised cities of Tamil Nadu.
It was a small village known as Kongunad. It came under the Chola rule in the 2nd or 3rd century and was later ruled by many dynasties. The British changed its name to Coimbatore.
Coimbatore or Kovai (its name in Tamil), is an ideal entry or exit point for Kerala and to the Nilgiris and Ooty.
