Badrinath, also known as Tapobhumi (land of meditation and penance) is one of the most holy place for Hindus.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu meditated here to do penance for indulging too much in worldly pleasures.
It is the part of North Indian Char Dham (Badri, Kedar, Gangotri and Yamnotri) and also is one of the four sacred Dhams of India (along with Puri, Rameswaram and Dwaraka).
Located at the height of 3,133 m (10,248 ft) in the Tehri-Garhwal region of the Himalayas, the Badrinath temple is dedicated to Lord VIshnu and was built in the early 9th century AD by Guru Adi Shankaracharya. The present structure of the temple was built by the kings of Garhwal about two centuries ago.
In it's backdrop is the Neelkanth peak (6600 m) and on its either side are two mountains of Nar and Narayan. The river Alakhnanda flows near the temple.
Enroute to Badrinath from Rishikesh, there are many holy places of pilgrimage like Rudra Prayag, Dev Prayag, Vishnu Prayag and Pandukeshwar (24 km from Badrinath) where the Pandavas are believed to have been born.
